Brownman speaks on Guru & Solar

Brownman was the trumpeter for Guru on his most recent Jazzmatazz projects & also toured with him. He also had first hand experience and insight to Solar’s abuse of Guru.  F*ck Solar got their hands on an 8,000 word interview with Brownman and The Boston Phoenix.  F*ck Solar has been consistent and vigilant in exposing Solar for the exploitation and abuse he’s had on one of our culture’s iconic MCs.  Salute to them!  Full Interview after the break.  Warning you, its not pretty and will make you pretty angered.

Greg Nice: Hip-HopDX Interview

I was never a big Greg Nice fan. I like “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow” as much as any other Golden Era fan. And he definitely adds the energy to any song he’s on (i.e. Beatnuts) but it was cool to read this interview and get the retrospect from a man who  has lived through decades of hip-hop and kept his credibility and persona (unlike LL).  I didn’t realize the strong connection he had to 2Pac and his connection to some of hip-hop’s early heroes.  Its a good read. Interview after the jump.

Guru Tribute – B. Hurt Video & Premier Mix

Filmmaker Byron Hurt put together a video montage as tribute to Guru. Its a collection of unreleased footage of Guru (and Premier) talking about MCing, where the music lives, and his love for hip-hop. Great editing here. The second part of this post is mix that DJ Premier did for Guru. Unlike the the tributes I’ve heard in the last week where DJs focused on Gangstarr’s best or favorite songs, Premier writes a not-so-subtle letter to “that other dude” via his mix. “Betrayal” as the first song was a impressive way to begin the mix to address the guy who took advantage of Guru and his legacy. Don’t believe me, read this. Thanks to Davey D & TSS for the links.

RIP GURU – Gangstarr Vol. A-Z

Guru of Gangstarr passed away today.  One of the most pivotal duos of hip-hop, along with EPMD, they really changed the landscape of the hip-hop sound and my life personally.  Love Sick was the first of many Gangstarr records I considered personal classics.  Although, Guru’s music post-Gangstarr was not my favorite, I still respected the man and his legacy.  I bet no one is going to be playing tribute sets with 7 Solar Grand productions in them.  With his passing, I hope the groups that squabble over small beef get their act together – talking to you, Little Brother.

In honor of Guru, here are Gangstarr Remixes and Rarities Volume A-Z.  Close to 400 songs here!Links and Tracklisting after the jump. This list contains 26 volumes of rarities; it contains 99% of what Guru and DJ Premier have ever recorded (minus their official albums, of course). the only missing ones are only some guru productions and a couple of buckshot lefonque ones DJ Rremier produced. enjoy.

The Wake Up Show w/ Gangstarr

gangstarrlegos

I was able to track down an April 2003 Wake Up show w/ Guru and Premier on it. I didn’t hear this live but remember a few friends years ago discussing it on the internets.  This is right before The Ownerz album dropped, if I am not mistaken. They go over many a moments such as the demos and first starting to how Primo got his name.  OF course, they also cut up and mix all of the Gangstarr Classics.  Enjoy!

Gangstarr – Non-Album cuts (Pt. 1 of 2)

After doing some e-digging last week for some Primo beats, I found some great catalogs of Primo beats online that were non-album cuts from Gangstarr.  I have most of these but wanted to share them with you!  I’ll post another 2 volumes tomorrow. Pass it along.

Guru – Jazzmatazz III – Street Soul

I kinda lost interest with Guru’s Jazzmatazz series after the second one but my brother Danny was the one that urged this album to me. Read the rest of this entry »
