Last Donut of the Night (video)

Last Donut of the Night from Tuomas Vauhkonen on Vimeo.

Nah Right posted this fanmade video of Dilla’s “Last Donut of the Night”. Kinda cool that Stones Throw actually released it. Think its a good ode to the track.

“Live Footage Plays Jay Dee”

Good friend, Jr-Flo of Keys N Krates, hit me up recently to this band from Brooklyn that embraces my love for hip-hop but is not restricted to the parameters of the genre. The level of instrumentation that Live Footage demonstrate as a duo is really impressive (one cello, one drummer, live loops). Although, the populous will warm up to them and their musical ideas through covers (Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Dilla), I think that you’ll really get to understand their creative direction when listening to their original work. With the “Jay Dee” mix, don’t expect to just hear a remake or karaoke version of Dilla, much more importantly, you’ll hear recreation and reinterpretation. Something that is no small feat.

Much like Keys N Krates, its exciting to see these guys on the bubble and know in a few short years (or less), these guys will be on every musical site/mag soon. Check out Live Footage at their website and click on the image above for the “Live Footage Plays Jay Dee” mix. Track-listing and video on the duo after the jump.

JGILLA’s “Gonuts”

JGILLA, a close friend of mine & contributor to Know The Ledge, shares his thoughts on Dilla’s “Donuts” in this “Kanye-era”.  Much like Donuts, this is thought-provoking and not digestible on the first run through.  I can see readers being turned off by the length of the editorial, in the same way, hip-hop heads were cynical when they knew Donuts had no guest appearances or MCs.  However, like those that persevered and took the time to evaluate the music of Dilla, our readers too will be rewarded with insight and thought-provoked opinion after reading this.  This is not for the simple-minded.   JGILLA, I hope you got as much satisfaction writing this, as we will reading this.  Salute!

The ReIntro Part 2 – DJ Franchise

The ReIntro Part 2 ends my two-part mix for my fellow lovers of hip-hop who are hesitant to give the new generation of MCs, DJs, and producers an open ear (much less heart).  Like many of us who grew up on this culture, we’ve been scorned. We see the art being substituted for commerce. Our exclusive “club” of friends and associates who you recognized loved hip-hop because of the way they nodded their head is now accessible to your grandparents and other unrecognizables. My effort here is to let my circle of influencers, my 5%ers, know that the music we love is well and strong. The quality is now in the minority but the impact is no less effective.  While Part 1 focused on earning your respect and was a subtle, approachable blend; Part 2 pushes the listener to engage in the lyrics and beats like we did when we walked the streets with headphones or in our rooms with speakers on blast.  Partake!  Tracklisting after the jump.

Jay-Z on Juan Epstein

Jay-Z finally made it to Juan Epstein!  Props to Cipha Sounds for getting him on. Jay-Z is about town doing interviews for his new book, Decoded. He probably thought who buys books? Nerds.  Who listens to Juan Epstein? Nerds. BINGO! Let’s reach the target audience.  Jay seems very comfortable and really forthcoming with his answers.  Dope stories told.  Although my liking for Peter Rosenberg and his interview persona are waning, my true dislike for this interview is for the girl that pops up in the middle asking dumb questions to Jay.  Who let her in the room?  Its not as bad as NY Delight was on the Combat Jack show but man, talk about interrupting the flow of an interview. Anyways, Jay resolidified why he’s my favorite MC and has great stories to share about Biggie, Kane, Dilla and more.  Enjoy.  Got a bonus in the comments section.

KTL 3 Year Anniversary Mix – 2010

Its been 3 years today. Wow. Time flies. What started as way for few brothers and friends to keep up to date on hip-hop and other topics we deemed cool, has turned into a lifestyle epicenter for thousands of people everyday. But over the years, its core has remained the same – a conversation between friends and family.  Thanks and props to AMART, DFLO, Weston, A.Flores and all the other extended KTL fam (JGILLA, Kamikaze Xavi, KG, etc.) for making this a highlight of mine and many others each day.  Feel free to peek from behind the digital curtain and say hello in the comments section.

As a thank you to everyone who has stopped by I made a mix to celebrate our 3rd birthday.  I’ve been working on it for a few months but got it finished and ready last week.  Like KTL, I kept the theme – positive, upbeat, and influential. With every mix, there’s a little piece of my sweat and alot of my soul.  So enjoy or destroy – whatever pleases you. Tracklisting after the jump.

The Sounds of VTech / JRocc at Timeless SXSW

FULL SCREEN
The Sounds of VTech / JRocc at Timeless SXSW

I believe this was taped at SXSW but I do know this tribute/screening will be shown in LA in early August. Info here.  This video is truly a thing of beauty.  One of the best DJs of our generation, J. Rocc, manipulates technology to give the audience a cool way to experience the music and film featuring Dilla’s music.  Props to pipomixes for this one.

Suite for Ma Dukes – Untitled/Fantastic

From Mochilla.com about the Suite for Ma Dukes DVD:

“Untitled/Fantastic is the emotional hub of Suite for Ma Dukes. When Mochilla/VTech screened the film in Detroit last week somebody shouted out, “Now that’s what I’m talking about…”

House Shoes has said several times, that he can’t watch Untitled/Fantastic without tearing up. If Suite for Ma Dukes has unlocked the emotional power of Dilla’s music, Untitled/Fantastic is the key. Here it is, our last offering from the three dvd set. To see the rest, you’ll have to purchase them.

Rest in Peace Dilla.”

From Nah Right.  Download the mp3 here.  Buy the DVD here. Nuff said.
